QUESTION: In the Training Level test 4, while executing the loop at the trot, letters MXF; what bends do you use, and where do they begin and end? Are they the same bends that would be used for the canter loop in First Level test 4?

Answer submitted by Maryal Barnett:
When riding the loop from MXF at the trot in the Training Level Test 4, it important to remember this is a loop and not two straight lines that go from M to X and from X to F. Going to the right, the rider should ride through the corner using the correct, inside bend. Then leave the wall at the letter M with right bend, begin to straighten so that she may prepare for the left bend that is needed for the loop. The quarter line is a good place to begin the preparation of positioning the horse to the left so the bend is developed for the loop. Also the horse should stay on the center line for 2 to 3 strides to keep the line round and the horse balanced. Upon approaching the quarter line, the rider should begin to straighten so that the horse may be prepared for the corner with first position right and then right bend so that the horse is balanced in the corner. The rider should plan to come back to the wall at the letter, F in this case. The line for the canter single loop in First Level Test 4 is the same, but the rider should not change the bend. Rather, the horse should maintain the slight bend and flexion in the direction of the canter lead. That is if the horse is traveling to the right on the right lead, the position and slight bend should be to the right so that the horse may keep his balance.
